See Ferguson @ 3:00 mark
On this warm fall afternoon in the basement of Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, poised at a worn wooden podium at the 129-year-old house of worship turned museum in Sweet Auburn, he guides a standing-room-only crowd of tourists and visitors through a presentation about Ebenezer’s connection to Martin Luther King Jr.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. There have been many challenges along the way. But as MLK, I have learned to to use challenges as my vitamins and transform what might appear to be a liability into an asset. One great challenge was moving to Atlanta.
Mr. Ferguson gave the attendees an opportunity to ask him questions and he answered them in the spirit of Dr. King.
Many of the students in attendance coincided in this being their favorite part of the event. Mously Diakate said, “I always thought, one day I would love to sit down with Dr. King and ask him a question. So this was my opportunity, probably my only opportunity.”
Ferguson, the son of a preacher, is bent on using his unique talents and gift to help keep King’s legacy alive for the next generation. That’s why he strategically, and successfully, secured a license and permission from the King Estate – which was no easy feat – whereby he pledges to sustain the integrity of the famed civil rights leader during his plethora of performances around the world,
During his study of King, Ferguson broke down the powerful speeches word by word. He’d note the crescendos and listen for nuances in tone. He also researched the circumstances surrounding the speeches. Before performing "I Have a Dream," Ferguson imagines himself as King in the early morning of Aug. 28, 1963, as the final touches were made to the historic speech.
Ferguson took to the stage without introduction or formalities, and immediately began the famous speech. He performed the entire speech, including imitations of King’s voice and mannerisms. After the performance, he held a question and answer session with Vice President of Student Services John Marshall.
